Department of Genetic Diversity
Formed between 2335 – 2340 AD, the Department of Genetic Diversity went under the guise of a governmental agency meant to ensure that the population of Mars did not suffer from genetic stagnation. People were encouraged to seek out life-partners who were the best possible genetic match to themselves, even offering tax breaks for those who entered into such unions.
The true purpose of the DGD was to create a new species of humanity. They did this by splicing the DNA of a bacteria, Pyrolobus fumarii into the human genetic code. Traits found favorable were P. fumarii’s ability to withstand temperatures in excess of 110 degrees Celsius for prolonged periods, among others. They did their job well, and today there are over 5 million of these new humans.
