Mars is arid, with a high concentration of iron in the soil, which causes its characteristic red color. The atmosphere is not breathable by human beings. All people on the planet live in or beneath man-made domes that were created early on, and established in the primary landforms described in 1888 by an Italian astronomer named Schiaparelli.

There have been attempts to create a dome on Olympus Mons, but all were unsuccessful, due to transportation issues. All ground transport is done underground, because of periodic dust storms on the planet.
